Pre Cancer Screening
The doctors at FPA also provide screenings for men and women.
What is a pre-cancer screening?
A pre-cancer screening is a test or procedure that checks for pre-cancerous changes within the body.
Who needs this kind of screening?
Both men and women, depending on the age and/or issue at hand, may get a screening. Consult your doctor to determine what kinds of pre-cancer screenings are appropriate for you.
What kinds of pre-cancer screenings are available?
If a woman, there are screenings specific to women only. They include breast cancer screening,
which is usually a physical exam. If appropriate, a mammogram is ordered. Cervical cancer screening includes a pelvic exam with a pap test. If you are a candidate for ovarian cancer screening, this may include a blood test, pelvic exam, and/or an ultrasound. If needed, you will be referred to a specialist dealing with women's issues.
If a man, there are screenings specific to men only. A prostate screening includes a physical exam and a possible blood test called a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen). You may also have a testicular screening which is usually just a physical exam. If needed, you will be referred to a specialist dealing specifically with men's issues.
What screenings are available for both men and women?
Screenings significant to both males and females include colorectal screening. This may consist of a few possible tests including an occult blood test, rectal exam, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy. A lung cancer screening usually starts with a baseline chest x-ray and may be followed by breathing tests, CT scans, or other x-rays. Skin cancer screenings are mostly performed through a visual skin examination. If anything unusual is found, a biopsy may be taken. You will be referred to a specialist in these areas if necessary for any testing or treatment.
Follow-up with your doctor to go over any test results.
